Cabling and Bracing: Can We Save Your Splitting Tree?

A quick note before this one: cabling and bracing isn’t currently listed among Irwin Clements Tree Service’s core named services (Stump Grinding & Stump Poisoning, Tree Climbing & Pruning, Tree Reduction & Shaping, Tree Felling, Wood Chipping & Sales). What follows is written as something our Arborist Consultations service assesses and advises on. If your crews do install cabling and bracing directly, let us know so this post can be updated to state that as a standalone service.

What is tree cabling and bracing? Physical support systems, flexible cable installed high in the canopy or rigid rods through the trunk, that reinforce a tree at a weak point such as a splitting union, so it can keep growing safely instead of being removed outright.

What Is Tree Cabling and Bracing, Exactly?

Cabling installs a support line between major limbs, usually in the upper canopy, to limit how far they can move apart under wind or weight. Bracing uses rigid rods, typically through the trunk at a weak union, to physically hold a split or splitting structure together over the longer term.

Can a Splitting Tree Actually Be Saved?

Often, yes, if the split is confined to a specific union and the surrounding wood is otherwise sound. Co-dominant trunks, two main stems of similar size from one base, are a classic candidate, since they’re naturally prone to splitting apart as both grow and add weight over the years.

When Won’t Cabling or Bracing Help?

If there’s advanced decay through the trunk, root plate movement, or the split has already progressed too far into structurally important wood, support systems won’t reliably prevent failure. An Arborist Consultation is the way to find out which category your tree is genuinely in before anything is installed.

How Often Does an Installed Support System Need Checking?

Where a support system exists (installed previously by another provider, for example), it’s worth having it checked as part of a routine Arborist Consultation every one to three years, since the tree continues growing around it and hardware can loosen, corrode, or need repositioning as branches thicken.

If you’re worried about a splitting or leaning tree, the right first step is an Arborist Consultation to establish exactly what’s going on structurally before anything else is decided.

We’re upfront that this is assessment-led advice rather than a guaranteed fix, since no support system can promise a tree will never fail in extreme conditions, only that a genuine structural weakness has been properly addressed rather than ignored.
